Living Buddha Lu Shengyan was born at noon on June 27, 1945 (May 18 on the lunar calendar) in a chicken coop by the Niuchou River in Houhu Township, Chiayi County. He escaped from air raids during World War II. My father was nineteen years old at the time and my mother was eighteen.
study
When he was in primary school, he was baptized as a Christian at the Kaohsiung Christian Xinxing Presbyterian Church and graduated from the teacher training class. He has worked as a Sunday school teacher and a Bible study teacher. Living Buddha Lian-sheng still respects Jesus very much and calls Jesus "my Gulu (teacher)".
Bachelor's degree in engineering, graduated from the Geodesy Department of Lianqin Surveying School (32nd period). During his college years, he published four books - The Collection of Light Smoke, Dream Garden Xiaoyu, Scattered Blue Dreams, and Ye Fei in the Wind. (Note: The Joint Logistics Surveying School, Army Institute of Technology, and Naval Engineering College were merged into the National Chung Cheng Institute of Technology in 1969. The National Chung Cheng Institute of Technology, the Armed Forces University, the National Defense Management Institute, and the National Defense Medical College were integrated into the National Defense University in 2000.)
Military duties and writing
After graduating from university, he served in Taichung Nanmen Bridge 5802 Surveying Company and Lianqin Drawing Factory as a surveying engineering officer. He has won many literary and artistic awards, such as the Bronze Camel Award, the Silver Camel Award, the Golden Camel Award, the National Army Literary and Art Golden Statue Award (the highest honor in the military), and the Literary Youth Medal. After ten years of service in the army, he was discharged as a major at the age of 34.
Regarding writing, Living Buddha Lian-sheng said, "I write books for no apparent reason. My purpose in writing is not for money or for sales. To be honest, it is to spread the Dharma and reveal my true nature. There is nothing else to it. My writing is not a literary skill, nor do I have any special techniques. It is very natural. I seek inspiration from my heart every day, and inspiration comes naturally..."
軍中職務與寫作
大學畢業後，服務於台中南門橋5802測量連，及聯勤製圖廠，任職測量工程官。得過許多文藝獎狀，如銅駝獎、銀駝獎、金駝獎、國軍文藝金像獎（軍中最高榮譽）、文藝青年獎章。軍中十年服務期滿，少校退伍，時年34歲。
關於寫作，蓮生活佛說：「我寫我書，名利非常的淡薄，我寫書的目地，不是為錢，也不是為暢銷。認真說來，是弘揚佛法，及流露我的真性情而已，其他，沒有了。我的寫作，也不是文匠，也無特殊技巧，很自然，每天從心中尋覓靈感，靈感自來也……。」
學道、學佛
1969年，蓮生活佛25歲。
某天清晨，蓮生活佛夢見自己在爬一座很高的山，進入山頂一間古老的廟。一位老道長合掌說：「才來嗎？我等你很久了。」
「道長和我素不相識，如何有約？」「怎麼不識，遍歷三教，遨遊四海，五百年一會，就算你墜入幽冥地獄，充當惡鬼，
我亦認得你本來面目！」
醒後，當天母親要去台中市玉皇宮拜拜，蓮生活佛是基督徒，竟也跟著去了。在廟裡，一位青衣婦人跪在神明面前，很多人站
在她身旁，她突然站起來叫道：「誰是盧勝彥？你們當中誰是盧勝彥？」母親叫他到青衣婦人面前，青衣婦人說：「菩薩盼望
你能站了出來，替菩薩行善行，傳道解惑，發揚佛家精神，揚善抑惡……」「我，我什麼也不會啊？」「目前你什麼也不會，但，
你若跪下，樣樣就會了，我不騙你，來，你跪在我的身旁，雙手合掌。」
蓮生活佛依言跪在菩薩面前，雙手合掌，雙眼一閉，奇蹟突然出現，眼前現出一道毫光，毫光中現出三尊坐著蓮花座的菩薩，光華璀璨，中間的菩薩開口說：「一心學佛。」左右兩尊菩薩開口說：「一心學法」和「一心向善。」接著從空中降下一道金光燦爛的紅布，布上寫著大大的金色「忠義」二字，耳聞不知何處傳來的聲音：「今玉帝特頒下『忠義』二字作為你一生做人處世的準則，凡事先問心性，可行與不可行，仰不愧天，俯不愧地，自自如如，道自永生，自自如如，與天地共存。」
青衣婦人問：「你看見了嗎？」「看見了，也聽見了，但，這怎麼可能呢？」青衣婦人說：「天下的事，很多令你想也想不到的，今天你總算看見也聽到了，慢慢的，你也會了解冥冥中的奇異世界，你就會變成與一般凡夫不同的另一個人，看到人所看不見的，聽到一般人所聽不見的，感覺到人們不能感覺到的。」並說：「神明會慢慢的指點你。」
從此，蓮生活佛開始學道、學佛。
無形靈師三山九侯先生授法。
受三山九侯先生指引，蓮生活佛拜清真道長（了鳴和尚）為師，依照道家皈依儀式「過功德」，成為一名修道人。清真道長是來自青城山的修道人，隱居於南投集集大山的蓮頭山。蓮生活佛為中華道教會慈惠堂石壁分堂道士、中華道教會道士會員。
於顯教皈依印順導師、樂果法師、道安法師。受菩薩戒於南投碧山巖寺，授戒師父是慧三老和尙、賢頓老和尙、覺光老和尙。蓮生活佛為中國佛教會會員，中國佛教會頒給菩薩戒戒牒。
1982年移民美國西雅圖，時年38歲。
1986年，蓮生活佛42歲，圓頂出家。剃度師是香港慧泉寺果賢大和尚，臨濟宗的傳人。
當時，蓮生活佛的出家弟子果賢大和尚前來拜謁，蓮生活佛心中閃出非常鮮明的強烈念頭：「出家吧！人生如幻，無常迅速，不可蹉跎，圓頂出家。」於是，就在真佛密苑，果賢大和尚為蓮生活佛剃度圓頂。
於密教皈依了鳴和尚（紅教）、十六世大寶法王噶瑪巴（白教）、薩迦證空上師（花教）、吐登達吉上師（黃教）。（四川青城山清真道長，即是了鳴和尚，與入川到中原弘法的諾那上師有大因緣，二人亦師亦友，諾那上師的密法，了鳴和尚一一的得到傳承，了鳴和尚也教授諾那上師風水、符錄、神算等。）
